VIDEO: Mumbai’s Police’s Women Personnel Turn ‘Didis’ to Help Sexual Assault Survivors

The Mumbai police force has deployed women personnel to break the ice with survivors of sexual assault, by developing a rapport with them and helping them report, and cope with, abuse. More than a thousand Police ‘Didis’ are dedicating several hours, after work, to travel around the city and raise awareness about sexual assault and abuse.

The operation was launched around two years ago in collaboration with NGOs. It has seen an improvement in the engagement levels of women and young girls.

“Now, women living in slums are coming forward more frequently and confidently to share their problems, including that of sexual harassment. This has been made possible only because our trained women constables have established a rapport with them through regular meetings,” said Deputy Commissioner (Operations), Mumbai Police, Ashok Dudhe to Indian Express.
