Tina Dabi, the UPSC examination topper of 2015, shared her story of success with students of her alma mater, Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi on Thursday.
“Wherever I go, I will work against gender discrimination and women empowerment. To whichever district I am posted I want to set an example for my subordinates by working with integrity and empathy,” she said.

The auditorium was packed with many students who look up to Tina as a source of inspiration, and she had many important things to tell them:“It is important to study smart. What I mean by studying smart is that it is important to focus on strong points and identify the strength and weakness. So I worked on it.”
When Tina sat for her preliminary exams, her main focus was on the finals. This resulted in her scoring lower than others at the preliminary level, but topping the finals. A political science graduate, Tine has been allotted Rajasthan cadre that she will join after finishing her training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie.
The 22-year-old had been the target of a lot of backlash from people who attributed her success to the fact that she belongs to the scheduled caste category. Tina responded to the backlash, saying that a set method of studying is what led her to clear her finals with a good score: “In the beginning when the television and newspaper wrote and said several things about me it affected me a lot. About my marks in the examination and my caste I was upset. But I learnt from all this and now it doesn’t affect me at all.”
Deciding that she does not want to look back, Tina is more optimistic about the future.“It is a man’s world and to fight back we have to develop a very thick skin. Take criticism very constructively, but at the same time fight back and retain your position,” she told the students.
