Indian Army Just Expanded Mumbai’s Green Cover with Thousands of New Saplings!

Not only does the Indian Army protect the nation in its hours of greatest needs, but is also helping rebuild a greener India. In a move to restore the ecosystem, the Army has started an initiative to plant saplings in Mumbai.

As a part of the Van Mahotsav festival, 2016, the army planted over seven lakh trees and the movement will be carried forward throughout the state.

At present, eight eco-battalions are involved in planting trees. The initiative is being funded by the Ministry of Environment and the State Forest Departments. Van Mahotsav is celebrated in India since 1950. It is conducted over a period of seven days and the festival aims at increasing the green cover in India. This year, the Maharashtra state government is working on giving the state a green makeover with the view towards spreading awareness against air pollution as well. And the Indian Army, with the belief that there is no armour stronger than the green armour, has joined in.

In a similar initiative last year, the Eological Task Force of the Indian Army and the forest department of Uttarakhand had planted more than one lakh saplings in just 19 minutes on World Environment Day. This achievement made it to the  Limca Book of Records.

A short film, with the message of saving and planting more trees, was recently released by the Indian Army on Facebook. Have a look here:
