The Pune collectorate has initiated a new programme called Mission Dhanwantari for the medical treatment of underprivileged children.

In the wake of the case of 6-year-old Vaishali Yadav, who underwent an open heart surgery with the help of the PMO and Pune district administration, the programme will be launched to provide financial aid and even free treatment if necessary to needy kids.

Vaishali had written to the Prime Minister in May asking for help in treating a hole in her heart.

A special committee, made up of district health officials and women and child welfare department officials, is being set up for this purpose. Children from local schools and aanganwadis in need of treatment have already been identified by the administration. Funds for the treatment of these 160 kids will be provided through corporate social responsibility funds and other schemes of the government.

A special tool-free number has been allotted for people to call and ask for help. It will be monitored by revenue officials and the socio-economic needs of children and their families will be examined before help is granted.

“Any child needing medical aid can contact via the toll-free number and a district committee on its panel will assess the genuineness of the case,’’ Pune District Collector Saurabh Rao said to Indian Express.
