The police dog squad of Karnataka, which has played an important role in cracking criminal cases such as bomb blasts, burglaries, murders etc. in the past, is rated as the second best dog squad of India. The first being in Tamil Nadu.
These dogs include German Shepherds, Dobermans and Labradors. Training begins when they are around three months old and by the age of nine months they are already proficient at sniffing, hurdle crossing and tracking, among other things. They are given the best possible food, care and shelter.
Although they tend to live for around 12-13 years, police dogs retire by the age of nine or 10, after which they are sent to animal welfare centres.
But the dogs develop a deep bond with their handlers and the sudden separation has an adverse effect on them – sometimes leading to death. This way, around 25 police dogs die every year.

In a bid to stop this, the Karnataka police department recently passed a notice that it will put up retired police dogs for adoption, including those that have been injured. The move has already garnered interest from animal lovers across the state.
