Sabine Harmes, a 32 year old Dutch woman on a spiritual journey to India, went missing in Uttarakhand on February 24.

After attempts by the family to trace her proved fruitless, her sister Suzanne Lugano put this information out of Twitter on February 28.

The tweet soon found its way to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who has earlier been lauded by many for her efforts to help foreigners in India, as well as Indians stuck abroad.

On her orders, the administrative machinery in Uttarakhand soon swung into action. A massive hunt for the missing woman was launched and she was found, on February 29, in a “mentally disturbed state.”

“My officers have located the missing Dutch girl Sabine Harmes,” tweeted Sushma Swaraj, adding “She is presently in Swatantra Ashram, Rishikesh. Our Regional Passport Dehradun has met her. She appears to be mentally disturbed.”

The Inspector General of Police (Garhwal), Sanjay Gunjyal, told The Times of India that the woman was found sitting under a bridge on the way to Neelkanth Barrage.

“She was then taken to a local hospital in Rishikesh for medical check-up as she was not in a normal mental state. After getting treated at Jolly Grant hospital and Doon hospital, she desired to go back to her own country. A police team, including a female local intelligence officer, has taken her to the Dutch embassy in New Delhi,” Gunjyal said.

The family of Sabine Harmes is appreciative of the help extended to them by the Indian government.
