Here’s some good news for people living in India. Ringing Bells, a private company, is all set to launch the ‘most affordable smartphone’ in the country on Wednesday. Priced at Rs. 500, ‘Freedom 251’ will be the company’s second phone.
The launch is in line with the Union government’s campaign on ‘Make In India’.
“Ringing Bells Pvt. Ltd., with immense support from Make In India, Digital India and Skill India programmes, is well-poised to launch the most affordable smartphone ever. The phone will be popularly priced at under Rs. 500. The final price announcement and the launch would be done by Shri Manohar Parrikkar, Hon’ble Union Minister, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India, in the presence of Shri Murali Manohar Joshi, Hon’ble Member of Parliament,” said a press release from the company.
At present, a good smartphone will set you back by at least Rs. 5,000.

Ringing Bells was established in 2015 and has its headquarters in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. It launched a smartphone for Rs. 2,999 only recently. At present, the ‘Bell 101’ is the cheapest 4G smartphone available in the Indian market. This phone has a 5-inch display, a 1.3GHz quad-core SoC, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of inbuilt storage.
Last year, DataWind had announced that it was teaming up with Reliance Communications to launch the cheapest smartphone costing Rs. 999. However, the phone is yet to arrive in the market.
