Meals for Rs 20 and Much More — the Railways’ Jan Ahaar Cafeterias

In a move that promises to delight the 30 million passengers who travel everyday by train in India, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has set up low-cost cafeterias in railway stations all over the country.

Known as Jan Ahaar Cafeterias, they have been set up with the objective of making available “economy meals and popular regional cuisines on platform at various stations”.

Here are some key features of the cafeterias:

  • They are self-service and operate 24×7.
  • They provide janta meals, economy meals, and other popular regional cuisines. Most items are priced below Rs. 20.
  • Service will be quick and will be patterned on take-away restaurants.
  • They are air-conditioned and located in the “ticketed” area of railway platforms.
  • They will also sell approved packaged items, ice-creams, and approved hot and cold beverages through vending machines.
  • They provide filtered/RO drinking water for free.
  • Seating will be limited to 8–12 chairs; most of the area is earmarked to facilitate eating while standing.
  • They have modular counters for display and computerised billing.
  • The kitchen area is visible through a glass partition.
