In a first, researchers at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) are using locally available plants to study the impact of pollution at the genetic level. The experiment has demonstrated that places with higher levels of pollutants like RSPM (respirable suspended particulate matter) creates an abnormal condition in these plants wherein the plants develop higher micronuclei frequencies. Although the study does state that the effect of pollution on plants and humans is not the same, it does claim that the results can be used to predict the risk to human health. As an additional feather in its cap, the study was recently published in the journal Environmental International.
