Bengaluru police inaugurated a dedicated cyber crime police station in the city on Monday. The department will take care of debit/credit card frauds and online scams. It is second of its kind police station in the city.
To keep a check on cyber crime cases being reported in the city, Bengaluru police has come up with a dedicated cyber crime police station.
Inaugurated at the City Police Commissioner’s office on Infantry Road on Monday, the police station is second of its kind in the city. The first one was set up in 2001.
The police station will take care of cyber crime cases like debit/credit card frauds equivalent to more than Rs. 1 lakh and online scams which amount to more than Rs 5 lakh.
Rest of the cyber crime complaints can be filed at the local police station, and they will be transferred to the cyber police station if they are unable to crack it.
The citizens of Bengaluru city, Bengaluru rural, Ramanagar, Tumakuru, Kolar, Chikkaballapura and KGF can file complaints in this police station. In 2013, the state government had sanctioned the opening of six cyber police stations across the state. The recently inaugurated unit is the sixth one.
Karnataka has five more cyber police stations already functioning in the state at locations including Mysuru, Kalaburagi, Dharwad, Davanagere and Mangaluru.
The newly inaugurated unit will be handled by Crime Investigation Department (CID) officials, like the other units. After two years, the police station will be handed over to the city police commissionerate.
Police personnel will be given necessary training to handle such cases during this period.
In 2013, 533 cyber crime cases were reported in Karnataka state and in 2014 it increased to 1,020. But only 104 persons were arrested in 2013 and 372 in 2014.
The first cyber crime cell of Bengaluru has investigated 509 cases and filed chargesheets in 144 of them in 13 years of existence. But none of them ended in conviction. The new unit is expected to help in resolving cases in a better way.
