When 23-year-old Devina Singh found out about Narendra Modi’s visit to Bengaluru, she stood on the road with a placard to ask him a crucial question. This is what it was.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, visited Bengaluru yesterday. The road right outside my house was blocked because he was crossing Koramangala, and I was standing in my balcony, hoping to catch a glimpse of the man.
Suddenly, a thought crossed my mind. What if I had one minute to ask the PM one question? What would it be?
The thought did not take much time to convert into action. I wrote my question on a placard and went out to the streets. It said-
“Dear Mr. Modi, Our Cotton Farmers Are Committing Suicide. What Can We Do About It?”
Having worked with cotton farmers for a long time, I am aware of a lot of issues faced by them. About 70 percent of these farmers commit suicide because of depressing agricultural yields.
While standing out there with my question, what really touched me was a beautiful gesture by two people from the transgender community who were passing by and noticed me.
Out of curiosity, they asked what I was doing there. And once I told them, they showed the willingness to join me in supporting the cause.
I think it is so beautiful that irrespective of our differences and varied issues in our daily lives, we took a moment to stand up for the hard working farmers who grow our food and clothes. The transgender community faces several issues of their own, yet these people did not think twice before joining me to help someone else, be it in a small way.
