The iconic Nargis and Raj Kapoor scene, the romance of Raj and Simran, and the sizzling Sridevi in a saree – watch them all in these remarkable posters, but with a twist. Here’s presenting ‘The Dirty Pictures’, a unique campaign that focuses on waste management.
Think of any Bollywood movie and you’ll find the stars romancing at exotic locations. From mystic pyramids of Egypt, to beautiful beaches of Switzerland – we have seen our actors looking flawless while performing at many such amazing places.
Not just international sites, but the beautiful Goa, the amazing North-East and the soothing South have also been explored by the Indian film industry. Remember the aesthetic yellow fields in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge?
Only if the entire country was as beautiful as it is portrayed on the silver screen. The one movie that can still pass for showing the real dangers and reality of this world, is Wall-E, which portrays the garbage filled earth of the future.
But not many Bollywood movies are in line with a study which shows that India generates 68.8 million tons of garbage per year and the figure is annually increasing. Delhi alone produces 8,500 tonnes of solid waste, 5,000 tonnes of electronic waste, 500-600 million gallon of sewage and 10 metric tonnes of bio-medical waste every day. Out of this, only five percent is recycled.
And then again, when it comes to attracting attention towards an issue, nothing works better than a movie in India. Remember how the entire country got concerned about dyslexia after Taare Zameen Par was released?
Hence, two organizations – Karma Recycling and Delhi I Love You (DILY), in collaboration with artist Shaily Gupta have come up with an amazing series of posters to spread awareness about waste management in India.
The posters are a part of a special waste management and recycling campaign called ‘The Dirty Pictures’, which was launched on 8th September, 2015 across 54 garbage disposal sites in South Delhi.
They show some of the most iconic scenes of Indian cinema, but the twist is that all those beautiful locations have been replaced with a dump yard.

It indeed is very hard to not notice this iconic Raj Kapoor and Nargis scene. But the garbage steals the thunder here!
Is it Sridevi dancing on the garbage? Yes she is! Can Mr. India help her get rid of all this mess?
Would Raj and Simran still fall in love if they met on a dump yard?
Well, the thing to remember here is that if we continue to create the waste at the rate that we do now, the fiction can soon turn into a reality.
