Over 2,000 fuel outlets in India will be powered by solar energy by the end of this year. This will enable dealers of oil companies to save about Rs. 20,000 monthly on the power bill. Here’s more about the initiative.
Following a recent green move by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, more than 2,000 fuel outlets will use solar panels or solar-wind hybrid systems to meet their power needs by the end of this year.
Dealers of oil companies like Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum will need to pay the cost of setting up the solar systems at their outlets.
For this, fuel companies will make sure the dealers get a subsidy of 40 percent while buying the required equipments.

The initiative will enable fuel outlets to reduce their dependency on electricity and diesel to run generators during power cuts. The cost of setting up the entire 1kW solar system is between Rs.1.5 lakh to Rs. 2.5 lakh and the dealers can save around Rs. 20,000 ever month on power bills.
The ministry plans to set up solar systems in about 2,150 fuel outlets in the country by the end of this year. The dealers are encouraged to set up solar systems with a capacity of 1kW to 25kW.
Initially, the fuel outlets in rural areas will be approached, since electricity is a major issue there. Oil companies’ representatives will explain the functioning of solar systems to the fuel outlet owners.
It will take about two months to set up a fully functional solar system at a fuel outlet.
