India has been able to earn about 100 million USD by launching 45 foreign satellites and 28 more satellites are set to be launched between 2015 and 2017.
India had earned about 100 million USD by launching 45 foreign satellites till date – informed Jitendra Singh, the Science and Technology Minister, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. This information was provided while placing the details of revenue earned by Antrix, which is the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The minister also claimed that it will be an uphill climb from here, since there are another 28 foreign satellites planned to be launched between 2015 and 2017.
Agreements have been signed for launching these 28 satellites for six countries, which include – Indonesia, Canada, Singapore, Germany, USA and Algeria.
According to Singh, ISRO has launched 45 foreign satellites and partnered with 19 countries up until now. And the revenue generated from this has been about 17 million USD and 78.5 million Euros (USD 85 million).
Regarding the matter of expenditure on the planned SAARC satellite project, Singh said that the regional bloc countries will be covering the cost of the ground system and India will bear the cost of building and launching it.
“The objective of this project is to develop a satellite for the SAARC region that enables a full range of services to all our neighbours in the areas of telecommunications and broadcasting applications like television, DTH, tele-education and disaster management,” said Mr. Jitendra Singh.
With a good plan and partnerships in their pocket, ISRO is bound to fly high in the near future.
