Talking about India’s Clean Energy Target, a UN Official has Some Great Things to Say

Did you think that India is known only for its population and pollution? Well, you might want to think that again, as a United Nations official has recently said that India can lead the world in the area of sustainable energy from renewable sources, because its clean energy target is way ahead of the UN global goal.

After a round table discussion on sustainable energy with Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal, United Nations Under Secretary General and CEO for ‘SE4ALL’ initiative, Kandeh K Yumkella, said that India’s progress is commendable and there is a lot more to be done.

India targets 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022. This will include 100 GW of solar, 60 GW of wind power, 10 GW of biomass-fired power and 5 GW of small hydro power.

“We used India over the past decade as a laboratory to bring convergence between energy access and climate change recognising still 2.7 billion people around the world rely on charcoal, cow dung and firewood to meet their primary energy needs,” said Yumkella.

Yumkella also stated that the partnership between India and the UN will lead India to become world leaders in the field of clean and affordable energy.

UN’s SE4AL i.e., Sustainable Energy for All initiative aims at making sustainable energy accessible to all by all by 2030.
