As DU welcomes its first batch under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), here are some pointers you must familiarize yourself with.
The session for the first batch of undergraduates in Delhi University with the new Choice Based Credit System, has begun. Here are a few pointers regarding the system –
1. The guidelines for adoption of CBCS are applicable to all undergraduate and postgraduate level degree, diploma and certificate programmes.

2. This system was adopted owing to the diversity of approaches with respect to examination, evaluation and gradation by different colleges.

3. A uniform grading system will facilitate seamless mobility of students across institutions, in India and abroad.

4. It will also help potential employers, and will make the process easier when they have to assess the performance of students.

5. There is a ‘cafeteria’ approach being taken under CBCS, wherein students will be able to pick courses of their choice, understand, and learn at their own speed.
They can also take up additional courses and receive more than the required credits.

6. There will be three kinds of courses – Core, Elective and Foundation.

7. UGC recommends the application of grade points and letter grades under the system to maintain fairness during assessments.

8. The calculation of the Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) will be done with the help of formulae.

These are the formulae to be used:
SGPA (Si) = ∑(Ci x Gi) / ∑Ci
CGPA = ∑(Ci x Si) / ∑ Ci
