Towards a cleaner country – Delhi’s cleaners and gardeners will soon be going abroad to learn about the art of maintenance of public spaces.

New Delhi has taken another step towards a clean India by planning to send gardeners and cleaning staff from the city, abroad for a training.

Yes, you heard it right. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), in the first-of-its-kind initiative, will send about 20 gardeners and safai karamcharis (cleaning staff) to get trained in using latest technology to maintain cleanliness in public places.

The visit is planned to be organised in August, in either Singapore or Shanghai. The initiative is a part of the “smart city” project which includes introducing latest technology in a phased manner for maintenance of public areas which are under the civic body’s jurisdiction.

The candidates will be expected to replicate the model in Delhi and also train other staff members after they return.

Since enhancing greenery in the city is one of the most important agendas of NDMC, gardeners have been included in the team who will be sent for the training.

The gardeners will get some crucial insights on open spaces, gardens, natural and community parks, to observe how greenery can be arranged in a unique and interesting manner optimising the current resources and spaces. On the other hand, the safai karamcharis will be taken around the city to give them an idea of how sweepers there maintain the cleanliness.
