The documentary showcases the life of children with speech and hearing impairment and how their inspiring strength has helped them overcome every challenge. The short film has already impressed Karachi and is now all set to be a part of the London Indian Film Festival.
Want to know how a simple visit to a school for children with special needs can impact someone? Meet Madhuri Ravishankar, a Bengaluru resident who once visited the School for Deaf and Mute Society in Ahmedabad and got inspired to make a documentary on the lives of children with hearing and speech impairment.
Now, the 18 minute long documentary, Goonj, which showcases the struggles of children living with disabilities in everyday life, is creating a buzz across the globe.

The short film was screened at the 8th Vasakh International Documentary Film Festival held in Karachi, Pakistan and left the audience teary eyed. After creating a warm impact in Karachi, Goonj will be screened in London Indian Film Festival after being officially selected for the Satyajit Ray Foundation’s Short Film Competition. It is one of the six shortlisted films from across India for the festival.
Madhuri, who has completed a specialization course in editing and cinematography and is currently pursuing Master of Design in Film and Video Communication course at National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad has previously won several awards for best cinematography at film festivals.

But this project was close to her heart because it was an eye opener for her as she found out that these children were able to look after themselves and did not need any kind of sympathy.
A visit to the organization in Ahmedabad made her realize how these kids had carved a beautiful world around them where they were happily overcoming every challenge they faced.

The same essence is fused in her documentary which showcases how a school has changed lives of these children. The story beautifully captures the life of a little girl Zuvaria, who is speech impaired and still says everything without uttering a word. Madhuri also wanted to cover the inspirational strength that families and kids with disabilities show, to overcome the issues.
