10 Lakh Consumers Gave up their LPG Subsidy Under the ‘Say-no-to-LPG-Subsidy’ Campaign

The three public sector oil companies have convinced 10 lakh consumers to given up their LPG subsidy leading to a saving of Rs. 140 crore for the Centre.

The campaign, ‘Say-no-to-LPG-subsidy‘, that began somewhere in January this year, has seen some good results coming in. Over 10 lakh people have said no to their LPG subsidy.

All the three public sector oil companies, that is, Indian Oil (Indane), Bharat Petroleum (Bharat Gas) and Hindustan Petroleum (HP Gas), have been running an audio-visual campaign to bring down the subsidy component.

All the three companies have a total of 15.3 crore registered consumers and the cost of the total subsidy for them is around Rs. 40,000 crore. The current aim is to persuade 1 crore consumers to give up their subsidy and they have reached 1/10th of the target.

Uttar Pradesh is leading in the number of people who have given up their subsidy, with 2.09 lakh consumers, followed by Maharashtra. UP also has the maximum consumers of LPG and most of the consumers who have given up their subsidy come from industrial areas like Noida.

Southern states have had a total of 2.16 lakh subsidies surrendered; Karnataka leading with 78,307 consumers. The campaign has also seen celebrity support with notable names like Yasmine Premji ( Azim Premji’s wife), Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam and Yesudas, saying no to subsidy.

The total savings for the Centre, from the subsidies that have been surrendered, is likely to  be Rs. 140 crore and it is expected that if the campaign runs successfully at the same pace, the saving can be significant.
