On October 15, 2014, celebrated as Global Handwashing Day, 12,76,425 students in Madhya Pradesh came together to wash their hands simultaneously. The tremendous effort has now been recognised by The Guinness Book of World Records.

A certificate recognising this achievement will soon be handed over to the state.

The record was attempted by the 12,76,425 students at various programmes held at 13,196 different locations across 51 districts in Madhya Pradesh.

These events were held by Panchayats and Rural Development departments on the World Handwashing Day in 2014.

The record was earlier jointly created by three countries — Argentina, Peru and Mexico in 2011 when 7,40,870 people participated in the attempt. Madhya Pradesh has now taken the recognition in its kitty by beating the old record.

The team from the Guinness Book of World Records had recorded the event on mobile phones in 19,735 schools.

Apart from government primary and middle schools, anganwadi childcare centres too participated in the event to create awareness about hygiene.

Congratulations to the kids who made this amazing record possible. Three cheers for a cleaner and safer India.
