In a recent project for National Geographic, photographer Anand Varma decided to raise bees in his backyard – in front of a camera – to get a really, really, REALLY close view of the first 21 days of a bee’s life.
The reason for this project? Bees are responsible for the pollination of 1/3rd of our food crops. Hence, it is important to try and investigate why bee colonies are disappearing and what makes them so vulnerable.
This incredible time lapse video reveals that one of the biggest threats to the beehives is a mite that attacks the baby bees during their first 21 days of life.
