An upheld heritage of India, River Ganga signifies more than just a flowing water body for us. It is a provider of livelihood, a pillar of religions and one of the oldest audience of Indian history. One of the major undertakings of Modi’s government has been its cleaning. Since 1986, a total restricted central cost of Rs. 4,000 crores has been dedicated on the part of the government for the rejuvenation of Ganga. However, in a massive elevation of finances, more than double its value has now been provided for the same cause.
Persisting with this duty, the Government of India on Wednesday provided a major financial push of Rs. 20, 000 crore to facilitate the cleaning of river Ganga.
“In order to ramp up progress, the Centre will now take over 100% funding of various activities or projects under this programme. Taking a leaf from the unsatisfactory results of the earlier Ganga Action Plans, the Centre also plans to provide for operation and maintenance of the assets for a minimum 10-year period, and adopt a PPP\SPV approach for pollution hotspots,” an official note on the decision of the cabinet claimed.
