Make Your Own Low-Cost Natural Perfume At Home: 4 Easy Steps

Shopping for the perfect perfume or body mist is a real challenge. After the first few rounds of testing, everything smells the same, and you  end up buying one that’s just too strong or just not your type.

The easiest way to get rid of these worries is to just make your own perfume. And if you think that’s going to be a complicated process, think again! You can make a fragrance that’s completely exclusive to your style with some natural ingredients that are available at home!

Before we get started, here are three aspects to keep in mind.

Every fragrance is made of three notes—the top, middle, and base notes.

The Top Notes: This is the scent you recognize immediately on application. This is also the scent that is the lightest and evaporates the fastest. Although it is the lightest, it is crucial because it creates the first impression. Typical top notes include citrus and herb scents.

The Middle Notes: The top notes smoothly transitions into the middle note, also known as the heart notes. These are also mild but are very well-rounded. These notes form the essence of the fragrance and last for most of the day. These notes mostly include rose, lemongrass and lavender.

The Base Notes: The base notes are essential for the dry-down period and creates a lingering effect on the perfume. The base notes can include scents like vanilla, patchouli and cedarwood.

What You’ll Need

1. Steel Strainer
2. Funnel
3. Carrier Oil – Jojoba Oil/ Sweet Almond Oil/ Grape seed Oil – 2 tablespoons
4. Drinking-Water- 2.5 tablespoons
5. Vodka/ Rubbing Alcohol – 6 tablespoons
6. Essential Oils: 9 drops for top notes, 15 drops for middle notes, 6 drops for base notes (your choice of fragrances)
7. Two Glass bottles with airtight lids

Let’s Do This!

1. Pour you base/carrier oil into the glass bottle and add drops of essential oils in the order: base, middle and top notes.
2. Pour the alcohol and tightly close the lid. Leave the bottle for two days (keep it isolated to avoid shaking/ movement of the bottle)
The strength of the scent depends on how long you leave the bottle. So if you’re looking for a strong fragrance, you can leave it upto two weeks.
3. Once you’re happy with the strength of the scent, add drinking water to the mix and shake well for a minute.
4. Transfer the perfume to the other glass bottle using the steel strainer and funnel and close with a sprayer lid for ease of use.

And there you have it! A DIY customized fragrance. This makes an excellent weekend activity and an ideal gift for a close friend!
