I, for one, get extremely flustered because I am always so confused about the government procedures I need to follow to get my work done. So, when I realised I left my passport in an auto-rickshaw, there was a moment of sheer panic.

But you don’t have to worry – as I got it all figured out. Below are a few steps you can follow in case you have lost your passport and need to reapply.

Step 1: File an FIR

Once you are sure you’ve lost your passport, you would need to file an FIR at the nearest police station. For this process, one should carry their address proof and most importantly, a copy of their passports.

In case you don’t have that, you need to book an appointment at the nearest Regional Passport Office (RPO) and get a copy of the passport at the time of filing an FIR. Documents like proof of address, birth certificate or Aadhar card would be required for the same.

Step 2:
Online Application

The next step is to register and reapply for your passport online on the official Passport Seva website. Once that is done, login with the registered ID. If you are in a hurry to get a passport, you should click on the ‘Tatkal’ tab, which will ensure you get the passport 14 days at max.

Click on the ‘Re-issue of Passport’ link, fill the passport application form and submit.

Step 3: Payment and Appointment Schedule

Click the ‘Pay and Schedule Appointment’ link on the ‘View Saved/Submitted Applications’ screen to schedule an appointment. In case you have lost your passport, you would need to pay a fee of Rs. 1,500, along with the processing fee.

Select the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or RPO most suitable for your location, along with the date and time suitable for the appointment.

Print the application receipt which would contain the Application Reference Number (ARN)/Appointment Number. Alternatively, you can go with the confirmation SMS you receive after submission.

Step 4: Make a List of Required Documents & Keep Them Ready

Visit the PSK on the day you have secured the appointment along with the original documents as required.
