Grab This T-Shirt & You Recycle 12 PET Bottles and Save 2700 Litres of Water!

Have you ever wondered about the quantity of resources consumed to manufacture your clothes? The amount of water used during the primary and secondary stages of production process? And ultimately the clothes end up in landfills, discarded for minor reasons. Besides the discarded clothing, plastic too adds to the mounds of garbage, considering India alone generates 26,000 tonnes of plastic waste every single day!

So how do we solve this problem? Combine the two?

Easy said and easy done, with Eco-Hike. The Tirupur, Tamil Nadu based organisation makes Polo shirts out of PET bottles and saves around 2,700 litres of water in the process!

It takes 2,700 litres of water to make one cotton T-shirt. The water consumption starts from the cotton farms continues to the dyeing and post-production washing in the factories. And these Eco-Hike shirts do not need that water as they are entirely made of recycled PET plastic bottles!

What is the plastic Polo shirt?

Kathir, the co-founder of Eco-hike shares with The Better India, “The T-shirts are made of 100 per cent recycled PET bottle polyester. 12 bottles make one T-shirt. The PET bottles are turned into flakes which are then made into filament polyester yarn. We then knit and process the fabric considering both sustainable and performance values to make the best of its kind. There is absolutely no water consumption in making our T-shirt as the process does not involve growing of plants/trees or rearing of animals. There is no dyeing involved and hence no water consumption in that process too.”
