If you live in Mumbai, you know that the local trains are the city’s lifeline. But on Wednesday this lifeline came to an abrupt halt.
For all of five minutes at its peak hour!
Mumbaikars know what a five-minute train delay to college and work may amount to!
How is this good news, you ask.
The Western Railways had a very heartwarming reason behind this unexpected delay.
It was for an injured pigeon.
According to a report in The Times of India, around 10 am, a passenger alerted the deputy station master of Goregaon station about a pigeon hanging from a thread over the Overhead Equipment mast at the north end of the railway station.
To avoid any delay, the deputy station master immediately summoned the Fire Brigade and Over Head Equipment (OHE) staff.
To facilitate this rescue, the Western Railway authorities switched off the power supply to the OHE wires for a few minutes.
Speaking to Midday, Western Railway chief spokesperson, Ravinder Bhakar said, “The fire brigade was immediately alerted, and power was shut down for five minutes at 10.28 am. The overhead wire staff along with the fire brigade managed to rescue the bird immediately after.”
The brigade completed the task with the help of high mast ladders and brought the entangled bird down safely.
The fire brigade was supported by Goregaon-based Samkit Group’s bird rescue wing as well, which runs a centre where injured birds are nursed back to health and set free in Aarey Colony.
With their help, the distressed bird was administered first aid.

The Midday report further adds how this isn’t the first time that the Western Railway engineers have gone the extra mile to help animals in distress.
Back in November 2018, the Western Railway engineers along with the fire brigade and animal activists spent five days trying to rescue a kitten that got itself trapped between the beams of a foot-over-bridge at Vile Parle bridge. They rescued the ball of fur by cutting open the beams.
We hope the rescued pigeon is taken good care of and set free to soar again. We also take a moment to applaud the exceptional teamwork. Hats off to them!
