In a state which continues to grapple with the paucity of teachers in government schools, a lone man from Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur is setting a positive example of what it truly means to be a teacher.
This 84-year-old teacher, despite his age, has been traveling to a government school, every single day, to teach young students, for absolutely no payment!
A former teacher at the Government Junior High School in Kant Block, Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Shri Krishnan Sharma has continued his role at the school for the past 24 years, even after retirement in 1995.
“I began teaching in 1958 and continue to do so, even after my retirement in 1995. The love received from the students keeps me going,” Krishnan told India Today.
Driven only by passion and the urge to make a lasting impact on the society, he has been teaching without any monetary incentive of a stipend or a salary.
This story paints a contrast to the situation of education in the state, which was recently found to be the state with the largest percentage of vacant seats for teachers, as per The Hindu.
According to the report, prepared by Child Rights and You (CRY), in association with the Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability (CBGA), UP has 2,24,329 vacancies for teachers in government schools, bringing the percentile to the highest at 29 per cent.
A resident of Mohanpur village, which is 8 kilometres away from the school, Krishnan travels on a bicycle to do what he loves the best every day–teach the English language. He has never missed a day of school.
His conviction has not only inspired other retired teachers to follow in his footsteps but also motivated students to attend school regularly, as reported by The Logical Indian.
He is one of the few unsung heroes who truly bring about crucial changes in society, through their simple yet honest efforts.
