Amar Lal, a 22-year-old, would have never been pursuing his dream career, if not for Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi.
A victim of child labour, Amar was rescued by Satyarthi’s Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) at the age of five years. Since then, his life has been steadily improving.
“I was working to fix a telephone pole when bhaisaab ji (Kailash Satyarthi) saw me. I was five-years-old when I was rescued by the Bachpan Bachao Andolan. I want to become a lawyer and contribute to the cause,” Amar told the Deccan Herald.

‘Bhaisaab ji‘, meaning elder brother, is an affectionate name given to Satyarthi by the rescued kids. The Nobel Laureate was overwhelmed with pride when he posted Amar’s story on social media recently.
He tweeted, “Today, my son Amar Lal stood in the court for a 17 yrs old rape survivor. It is our proudest moment as parents of this bright young lawyer who we rescued from inter-generational slavery at the age of 5. He stayed at Bal Ashram until he completed his education. Way to go!”

Amar, who is now studying law in Noida, is the first-ever member to be educated from his family.
He tells the publication, “We belong to the Banjara community. We never get a chance to attend school as we keep travelling from one place to another.”
Amar is originally from Rajasthan. With his law degree, he aims to fight for justice for rape survivors.
Another such case is of Kinsu Kumar who was rescued by BBA in December 2003, at the age of eight. Now a BTech student in Rajasthan harbouring a dream to become an IAS officer, Kinsu previously washed used cars in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. Much like the others, he was also rescued after being found to be a victim of child labour.
India has approximately 38.7 million boys and 8.8 million girls as victims of child labour, as reported in a 2016 survey by Save the Children. To counter this, Satyarthi’s Bachpan Bachao Andolan has liberated over 87,000 children from various forms of oppression.
