CBSE To Now Provide Copies Of Board Exam Answer Sheets At Rs 2/Page: Facts To Know

In August 2011, the Supreme Court permitted students appearing for the board examinations for classes 10 and 12 to access their evaluated answer scripts. While this was seen as a good step, there have been many hurdles in its implementation. Students have also alleged that the board has been charging them exorbitant amounts to access the papers.

Very often, the high amount that the board charges to access the answer scripts acts as a deterrent for a student who wishes to get them.

To curb this, a contempt petition was filed by Whistle for Public Interest (WHIP), an organisation consisting of young lawyers working to promote transparency and accountability in the affairs of public authorities.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court took up this contempt petition and dismissed the same. In 2018, about 28 lakh students appeared for the grades 10 and 12 board examinations. With such a large student community, it is imperative that the board and its policies are friendly.

A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph accepted the submissions of senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE), that the apex court order was being followed.

The SC disposed of the contempt petition and accepted the board’s petition to provide the answer scripts to the students upon payment of Rs 2 per page.

From revising the pass criteria, to making provisions for students who are diabetic and suffer from other such illnesses, the CBSE has constantly been ensuring that they put the students first. These changes in policies are meant to further that.
