Commander Abhilash Tomy, the naval officer who was participating in the Golden Globe Race, was stranded in the southern Indian Ocean after a storm destroyed the masts of his yacht. He was suffering from a back injury, which hampered his chances of getting to a safe place. The Indian Navy Reconnaissance aircraft tracked him down earlier this week, and he was rescued by a French vessel, Osiris on Monday. You can read in detail about the officer and the rescue here.
The story of Captain Alok Ananda, who rescued Tomy even when his father passed away the same day has undoubtedly left us emotional, but Irishman, Gregor McGukin, was also of great help during the rescue operation.
Gregor, who is from Dublin, was also a participant in the race when he was notified that his competitor, Tomy was stranded.
Even though he was caught in the midst of a violent storm himself, which resulted in him getting rolled over and losing his mast, he did not declare an emergency and kept steering towards Tomy.
The French vessel successfully rescued both the participants from the Indian Ocean and brought them to safety.
