If you drive a car in Mumbai, you are familiar with the pain of finding a suitable place to park. In a city which is already choked, parking lots are a luxury and hard to come by.
As reported in the Hindustan Times, in order to ease the woes of the public, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started to develop a mobile app, on the same lines as the IRCTC booking app, which will enable Mumbaikars to book parking slots online, at 7 parking lots in South Mumbai—including the one at Eros Cinema, Crawford Market, Flora Fountain and 4 others, by the end of the year.
So, how will the app work?
The app will help a person look for available parking slots at any time, allowing them to book in advance for an hour or more. They can pay the parking charge online, show the e-receipt at the parking lot, and park their car.
BMC has already invited expressions of interest (EOI) from companies, to develop the app.
Transport experts are hailing this move by the BMC.
“The plan needs to be holistic. BMC needs to map all parking lots in south Mumbai, only after which will this mobile application be successful,” said AV Shenoy, a transport expert, Mumbai Vikas Samiti, to the publication.

The BMC wants to make finding parking hassle-free, and weed out corruption in the parking consortium, and under its new parking policy, the city has been divided into three zones based on the density of traffic and rates in each zone have been hiked by up to 300%. Parking rates in the city range from Rs 20 to Rs 60 per hour.
