As students, we often get told that good marks = good job = good life. We grow up believing that getting good marks is the most important mission that we, as students, are on.
Ram Keshav, a teacher of photography also grew up with similar notions until he met his ‘nemesis’, his physics teacher.
Passionate about photography, Ram often felt stifled sitting in class. In a post on the Humans of Bombay page, Ram speaks about the encouragement he received from his physics teacher, who once said to him, “Son, I’m being honest with you. I’m not going to sugarcoat it. Physics is not for you. Go find something you love.”
Those words not just changed his life but made him a happier person.
Ram went on to study photography abroad, and throughout his course, he kept in touch with his physics teacher, who went from being his nemesis to his mentor, supporting him along the way.
In the post, he also talks about how his teacher volunteered to be a subject in one of his photo projects.
Ram’s photography classes allow students to explore the passion, their love and their thoughts, “the real things that matter”, he says. He takes immense pride when his students showcase their work or show him their first pay-cheque.
One kind deed begets another, surely.
