When we mention the most loved tourist spots in India, the first guess would be the Susegad state of Goa, with its numerous beaches, old churches, waterfalls and heritage forts, right?
But apparently, the state seems to have tough competition, as three other states top charts, not just regarding Foreign Tourist Visits but also domestic travellers.
Do you know how many tourists visited India in 2017? A whopping 2,68,86,638, reports Bangalore Mirror.
Topping the charts with a maximum of these FTVs is the state of Maharashtra, which recorded 50,78,514 such visits. Second in line is the state of Tamil Nadu, that recorded 48,60,455 FTVs and Uttar Pradesh, with 35,56,204 FTVs is ranked at number three.
For domestic seekers of wanderlust, Tamil Nadu tops the list with over 34,50,61,140 Domestic Tourist Visits (DTVs), followed by Uttar Pradesh at 23,39,77,619 DTVs. Karnataka which is at number 11 in foreign visits, debuts at number three on the domestic list!
Speaking to the publication, KJ Alphons, Minister of State for Tourism (independent charge), reveals how the government has not categorised tourist places in India. The ranking of these States/Union Territories (UTs) is done solely by the information furnished by them on DTVs and FTVs.

From beaches that adorn its 700 km long west coast to strategically-built forts that narrate its rich history, Maharashtra has a host of places to offer to the backpacking tribe. While you may be aware of most Mumbai beaches, here’s a list of lesser-known but scenic beaches in the state. These include beaches at Harnai-murud, Velas, Ganapatipule, Shrivardhan, Bordi-Dahanu, Divegar, Guhagar, Velneshwar, Harihareshwar, Vengurla, Kihim, Tarkali and Shiroda.
If historic places excite you, apart from the popular Ajanta, Elephanta and Ellora caves, you can also explore Karla, Bhaje and Bedse caves, Kuda, Mangi Tungi hills and Pitalkhora. Do also explore wildlife sanctuaries, waterfalls, forts, hill stations, religious shrines and adventure sports in the state. Check these out here.
