Mumbai residents take their beach clean-ups very seriously. In September 2017, around 1400 volunteers cleaned the Versova beach, which you can read about here, and in February 2018, a drive called ‘Beach Please,‘ helped clear massive sections of the Dadar beach. Thanks to this initiative in July 2018, 200 tonnes of garbage was cleared in 24 hours!
Well, this Sunday, residents of Napean Sea Road got together and removed seven tonnes of waste from the beach and lagoon at the Priyadarshini Park (PDP), reports DNA.
The residents organised the ‘Beach and Lagoon Clean-Up’ and were supported by the Rotary Club of Bombay Harbour and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Kids from the BMC schools participated in the drive as well.
According to Masood Saifudeen, the President of the Rotary Club of Bombay Harbour, the residents were inspired by the other successful clean-up drives in the city and decided to organise one of their own after noticing that the sea threw up a lot of garbage during high tide.
Echoing the sentiments of the residents and others who took part in the clean-up, Mukul Mehra, Secretary, Napean Sea Road Citizens’ Forum (NSRCF) said, “We use the place every day, and it is in our vicinity. Therefore, the onus of cleaning it is on us.”
Kumar Jain, who lives in the area and visits the park regularly, spoke of the dedication of the participants, mentioning that they were so invested in cleaning that they did not rest for over an hour.

The drive was evidently a success, and V Mote, the Assistant Municipal Commissioner, D Ward, said that seven tonnes of waste was removed from the beach. He has requested the public to actively participate in such activities to ensure that these efforts do not go in vain.
