With the monsoon season in full flow, parts of North India are reeling under heavy showers. Despite mother nature’s fury, two Head Constables, namely Gurdhian Singh and Gurdev Singh, stood knee-deep in water on the streets of Chandigarh, directing traffic. Their response to the call of duty ensured that commuters could travel without any major hassles.
Initially, their efforts didn’t get the attention they deserved. However, in the age of smartphones and social media, where no good or bad deed of public servants goes unnoticed, this was bound to change at some point.
Sure enough, thanks to the netizens on Twitter, not just the entire city, but even Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh took time out to appreciate their efforts.
It was actor Gul Panag, who first posted photos of Gurdhian Singh standing knee-deep in water and regulating traffic on Patiala road in Chandigarh, on her Twitter timeline. In the same tweet, she also managed to tag the Punjab chief minister’s Twitter handle, bringing his attention to their efforts.

Panag’s tweet also stated her desire for the government to reward these policemen. Both men at the centre of attention in this event responded to her demands and expressed their gratitude, saying they were only doing their duty.
After her tweet, the Chief Minister directed the Punjab police officials to honour both cops, who are reportedly posted in the Zirakpur area of Chandigarh. Yesterday, both of them received certificates of appreciation and a token amount of Rs 1000 each. Both cops were kind enough to thank the CM.

To further strengthen their community policing efforts, the Punjab Police has started an initiative which plans to highlight the good work done by traffic police personnel. They will be honoured as the ‘police personnel of the week/month,’ according to this report in the Tribune. The selection for this honour will be based on the feedback they receive from citizens.

Based on the feedback they receive, personnel will receive commendation certificates with the title “You Make The Difference” and cash rewards.
