Polar Maidens: Meet 2 Indian Women Who’ll Be the 1st to Conquer South Pole on Skis

It surely takes courage to visit a place where you can lose your fingers and toes if you don’t keep them warm. Well, Madhabilata Mitra, who is a Kolkata-based mountaineer and model, and Tanvi Buch, a Mumbai-based architect and photographer, are part of a 6-woman global team, which will leave for a skiing expedition to the South Pole this December.

As reported in The New Indian Express, the expedition, called ‘Polar Maidens,’ will see the team train in Scotland, from September 1–9, visit London, then return to India.

After that, they are likely to start their journey in mid-December according to Ankita Mitra, who is the director of Kolevent, a Kolkata-based agency, that will be sending Madhabilata and Tanvi for the expedition.

24-year-old Tanvi is the youngest member of the team.

If successful, Madhabilata and Tanvi will be the first two Indian women to ski the last degree to the South Pole. The team will be led by Guinness World Record Holder, explorer Janice Meek. The other three members are from the UK, Canada and Ireland.

The two ladies are optimistic. Madhabilata is a trained mountaineer and has undertaken rescue training to avoid any difficult situation during rock climbing and mountaineering. Tanvi is equally enthusiastic and says that she is trying to get fit enough to survive in the situation and complete the journey.

Well, hopefully, these two women and the rest of their team will conquer the South Pole, and make us proud! We wish them all the best.
