In a first, Karnataka has taken the lead in implementing a ‘No plastic policy’ across all technical education institutions across the state beginning this academic year.
An official circular issued by the state department of technical education has mandated all government, aided and private engineering and polytechnic colleges to ban the usage of all types of plastic articles in their campuses.
Additionally, a framework of rules and regulations over the same is required to be circulated amongst students and faculty members through notice boards and college websites
A recent incident in one of the government colleges was the trigger for the state department to initiate this move.
“At an event organised recently at one of our government engineering colleges, we noticed almost half a truck of plastic cups and plates being used to provide lunch to students and staffers. Subsequently, we called a meeting and took the decision to implement a ban on plastic on the educational premises,” an official of the technical education department told The New Indian Express.
Starting with the elimination of plastic cups and glasses from canteens and hostels, the concerned authorities expect the colleges to avoid using the non-biodegradable material even in mass events like graduation and annual days and also during the visits of higher officials.

“Considering the ill-effects of plastic on health and environment, we have decided to enforce a blanket ban on the use of plastic at colleges,” the official added.
The department is quite serious about its policy and will be deploying officials to conduct surprise visits. If any college or institution is found to be violating the plastic ban order, the authorities intend to penalise the concerned management.
