In A First, MP Medical University Allows Students To Write Exams In ‘Hinglish’!

Although the English language may be the lingua franca of the world, not everyone is fluent in it, and judging the intelligence of people based on their ability to read, speak or write English, is a particularly prejudicial thing to do.

Understanding this problem, the Madhya Pradesh Medical Science University (MPMSU) has allowed students to use “Hinglish,” which is a mix of Hindi and English, in all written and oral examinations.

According to the report in the Times of India, a circular issued by the varsity on May 26, stated that, “Following a detailed discussion, the board of studies has decided that the students of all colleges will have the option to answer questions in their examinations in English, Hinglish (a mixture of Hindi and English) and Hindi.”

The circular also states that this freedom of choice will be given in both oral and practical exams, and marks will not be deducted if the answers are scientifically or technically correct.

“Students and other concerned people are welcoming the decision as it is bound to help medical students especially those hailing from rural areas,” Dr RS Sharma, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, told PTI today.

When asked about the logic behind this step, Dr Sharma informed TOI that a certain Dr Manohar Bhandari, a professor of anatomy in Indore, has carried out an elaborate study to show that meritorious students coming to medical colleges from Hindi medium schools do not fare well in their exams.

“This is not because they don’t understand their subjects but because they fail to express themselves in English, and therefore, this move has been taken in their interest,” Dr Sharma said.

This unique decision will undoubtedly come as a boon to students coming from a rural background or the weaker sections of the society. However, measures to teach them the English language should be taken up, as mastering it will be highly advantageous for them in the future.
