16-YO From Haryana Breaks Record, Becomes Youngest Woman to Scale Everest!

16-year-old Shivangi Pathak has become the youngest girl to scale Mount Everest from the Nepal side.

Born in a small town called Hisar in Haryana, Shivangi climbed the Everest with a motto that women could overcome every possible obstacle to achieve their goals.

She was among 59 other Indians who were part of the climb this season. You can read about the father-daughter duo who scaled the Everest, here, and also about the 40-year-old mother of four who managed this feat, here.

Inspired by Arunima Sinha, the first Indian amputee to climb Mt Everest, Shivangi has watched many videos of Arunima.

Shivangi Pathak – all smiles

Shivangi told NDTV, “I am here to fulfil my childhood dream. I have my only mission to conquer every mountain on this beautiful planet.”

While congratulatory messages are pouring in from all quarters, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted on Sunday, May 20, that Shivangi’s accomplishment was stupendous.

In April 2016, we wrote about Pooja Mehra, a resident of the remote village of Teihaat in Uttarakhand. At 18 years of age, she shot to the limelight by scaling the Everest.

What makes her story even more unique is that her endurance came from working in fields, collecting fuelwood in forests and helping her mother with household chores.

Her father, a farmer, doubled up as a bus driver in his spare time, would intermittently return home with additional salary and whatever vegetables he could procure. Even then, the family earned a little less than Rs 9,000 a month from the farming and the driving.

You can read all about it here.

Stories like these leave us with hope and instil in us the confidence to take on mammoth challenges.
