The Datwas Police Station in Rajasthan’s Tonk district could figure in a film for their recent actions. Tonk is a backward district in the state of Rajasthan. The police unit there got a debt-ridden MGNREGA (national scheme that warrants “Right to Work”) worker, Mamta Mahawar married on Akshaya Tritiya day i.e. April 18th.
The police station was decorated for the occasion and the duty staff stood in for witnesses and played host, all at the same time.
The bride had lost her father when she was still a toddler. Two years ago, she also lost her only brother after a prolonged illness. Since her brother’s death, Mamta had been working hard as an MNREGA labourer to be able to repay the loan taken while her brother’s illness.
Since Mamta had worked as an MGNREGA worker on the police station premises too, the staff there was aware of her financial duress. In fact, once when she hadn’t obtained her NREGA payment that was overdue, she even had to lodge a complaint there.
The Rajasthan Post informs that she did get the payment after the Sarpanch was asked to look into the matter but still she could not afford the wedding expenses, according to SHO Dayaram Choudhury. Then, the police station staff decided to pitch in and help her get married. They not only helped out financially with the wedding expenses but also played host to the bridegroom’s family. Mamta sure is a lucky woman!
