Delhi Cops Offer Citizens Rs 3.6 Crore in Rewards If They Help Catch Crooks

Are you a resident of the national capital? Would you consider yourself to be a vigilant citizen? If you answer these questions in the affirmative, here’s your chance to get rewarded.

To encourage citizens to be a part of the policing system and keep crime rates low, the Delhi Police is offering rewards of up to Rs 3.6 crore for those who help catch the city’s most-wanted criminals or aid in tracing the thousands of missing people and children.

The records suggest that Delhi has almost 1,291 missing or abducted cases and if you can help find them or assist in finding them, you could be the recipient of the award.

Bounties for wanted criminals amount to a total of Rs 56 lakh and credible clues that can identify dead bodies carry rewards of Rs 45 lakh in all.

“Solving a crime or catching a criminal is primarily the role of the police, but there are a lot of people who have had a bad experience with criminals or those who want to help the system. Offering big amounts as rewards serve as an incentive for them to cooperate with us,” said Ved Marwah, former Commissioner of Delhi Police who described the practice as “very helpful” in a report to The Hindustan Times.

In an interview with The Better India, Vikarmjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Delhi said, “This practice of rewarding the public and informers is something that has been in existence for a very long time. In fact, not just the Delhi police, but most other state police follow this.”

While the police force is there for the protection and maintenance of law and order, they cannot be everywhere and hence rely on the public and their network of informers to keep themselves updated.

“In our need to get information – about nefarious activities, abduction cases, and even identification of dead bodies, we often engage with the public.”

“In cases of missing children where our efforts are unsuccessful, we declare a reward to the public to encourage them to come forward with any information they might have,” he said.

He continued, “There have been instances when these rewards were given to people who showed exemplary bravery – saving people from fires, for instance. Sometimes the fire engine’s response time is a little longer than it should be and in those cases, we have had passersby and onlookers take charge and help those stuck in the fire.”

When these acts are brought to the notice of the police department, it ensures that suitable rewards are given to the people.

The Delhi Police website has a dedicated page which has photographs of ‘Most Wanted Criminals’ along with the reward to helping find each of them.

“The reward amount depends on a number of factors – number of cases the criminal is wanted for, the gravity and seriousness of the crime etc. The reward amount is also reviewed from time to time. In cases of missing children, also we revise the reward amount by the time that has lapsed,” he said.

Vikramjit also gave credit to the citizens who have been pro-active in helping the police catch criminals, thereby averting further crimes.
