Delhiites, are unscheduled power cuts proving to be the cause of your despair? You may soon be able to claim compensation for it!
As the mercury rises, almost reaching 40 degrees in the national capital, one thing Delhiites cannot afford is an unscheduled power cut. While generators seem to be a source of relief for many of them, one can imagine the plight of those who don’t have one.
Realising the plight of the residents, the Delhi Government on Tuesday, April 17, approved a policy to allow compensation for unscheduled power cuts lasting more than an hour.
But this policy can come into effect only if it is approved by Lt. Governor Anil Baijal, reported NDTV.
This policy to provide compensation approved by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will apply to users who face unscheduled power cuts by the private power distribution companies. It will now be reviewed by the Lt. Governor who will decide if the policy can see the light of the day.
According to an official statement issued by the government, this policy proposes that DISCOMS (power distribution companies) restore electricity within one hour of an unscheduled power cut, the failure of which will invite a fine of Rs. 50 per hour per consumer for the first two hours, after which it will increase to Rs. 100 per hour per consumer.
The compensation amount would then be provided to the consumers in their monthly electricity bills, added the statement.

Hopeful that the Lt Governor will give them a green signal, the official statement said, “The Delhi government is confident that the LG will concur with the policy and endorse this pro-consumer step, which will become a model for other governments across the country.”
We hope this policy comes as a relief to consumers facing recurring power cuts and helps other state governments to undertake similar measures.
