As our cities get increasingly urbanised, it is important to make efforts to preserve and expand the rapidly shrinking green patches, and Pune is doing just that. The upcoming metro rail, which promises to make commuting in Pune easy, is also expected to follow suit.
Maha Metro is developing metro rail connectivity in Pune. The first phase of the project is from Pimpri-Chinchwad to the Swargate corridor covering 16.6 km and from Vanaz to the Ramwadi corridor covering 14.7 km. Both these lines will serve as fantastic ways to ditch road traffic and reach your destination quickly.
Interestingly, the metro authorities have put plans in place to make it green. The metro pillars will have vertical gardens, which will serve a dual purpose.
They will not only beautify the area but also simultaneously purify the air and reduce the harmful effects of pollution.
Pune has already started a bicycle sharing scheme in the city called PEDL. Citizens can rent bicycles using their app. The service will be a fantastic option to solve the first mile-last mile issue associated with the metro rail.
Brijesh Dixit, the managing director of Maha Metro, spoke about the plans of developing vertical gardens on metro pillars.

Speaking to the Hindustan Times, he confirmed that Maha Metro had already developed similar gardens in Nagpur, and said, “We have conducted successful trials in Nagpur and are now ready to implement the plan in Pune.
For the vertical garden, we will use recycled water through a drip irrigation mechanism. In some places, we plan to use hydroponics technology to save water. We have all the prerequisite machinery necessary to take care of the plants.”
Such vertical gardens have already started growing on flyover pillars near the College of Engineering, Pune.
Metro rails will help reduce road traffic since they are fast, easy and cheap methods of commuting. Rental bicycles for the first and last mile from metro stations will further help curb traffic and pollution.
Adding to that the vertical gardens on the main pillars of the metro will undoubtedly enhance the beauty of Pune roads while providing fresh air.
