Chennai Central is a vital station, catering to more than 5 lakh passengers every day, and now, it is all set to give its passengers fantastic new amenities.
The railway station is getting a significant upgrade and has begun to work on giving out spaces for at least three food plazas, a new unreserved ticket counter, and a roof, for the path that runs between the main and suburban terminals.
The new unreserved ticketing office will be near platform number 1. This will be accessed by people coming from the Walltax Road entry point. Right now, all passengers from platforms 1, 2, and 3 need to walk to the Moore Market Complex (MMC) building, where the unreserved ticket counter is on the ground floor.
A Railway Official quoted in the Times said that the new counter would help distribute the ticket-purchase rush and reduce queues. Since more than 90% of railway passengers are unreserved, this will smoothen things out.
The food plazas will bring relief to passengers who have to travel quite a bit, all the way to the old concourse, according to officials. Earlier, a space was used by the Southern Railways to conduct awareness programmes but is now lying vacant.
Another food plaza will come up, between MMC and Chennai Central. The IRCTC has already begun short-listing contractors, who responded to the tender.
The multi-cuisine food plazas will provide food at market rates, according to a Railway official, who added that they would be tendered by the IRCTC after space has been identified by the Railways.
The third upgrade is a roof which will protect the passengers against the elements by covering the path between MMC and Chennai Central. The roof also might clear the confusion certain passengers have regarding the two stations.

Chennai Central’s importance as a railway station, as mentioned earlier, is not being overlooked, and the Railways seems to be on a mission to make the station a second home for passengers.
