Ever been stuck in Bengaluru traffic, cursing your bad luck and wondering when things might improve? Well, they might, thanks to this brilliant idea, by the Indian Railways. The national transporter has given the green signal for an expansion project. Two additional lines, from the Bengaluru Cantonment to Whitefield, will be built at the cost of Rs 492.87 crores.
The Ministry of Railways released a statement that outlines certain details of the project. The 25 km stretch, will involve the six most important stations in the city—Bengaluru Cantonment, Bengaluru East, Baiyyapannahalli, Krishnarajpuram, Hoodi and Whitefield. Commuting and travelling daily in the city will be easier and faster, as the project will benefit around 62,000 people.
At present, around 146 and 94 trains run from Bengaluru and Yesvantpur stations, respectively and among them, around 122 cater to suburban commuters. The new project is slated to take around 2-3 years to complete, and will be a blessing for those who travel to Whitefield, the IT hub.
Currently, the Bengaluru–Whitefield section is the busiest, in terms of suburban trains. 26 suburban services and seven long-distance trains in Bengaluru were added in the last 1.5 years itself. Additionally, four suburban services between KSR Bengaluru–Baiyyappanahalli and Baiyappanahalli–Bengaluru have been introduced as well.

The Whitefield area experiences deadly traffic snarls, on a daily basis, especially during peak hours, when offices either commence or stop work. The introduction of fresh public transport services will ease the burden the area currently faces, thus making commuting there, slightly less nightmarish.
