What if your donation of e-waste could help educate a child?
In a unique recycling initiative, a Navi-Mumbai school is not only helping citizens manage their e-waste but also giving them the joy of contributing to the education of an underprivileged child.
Spearheaded by the students of Anjuman-I-Islam A A Khatkhatay English secondary school in Vashi, this unique e-waste management initiative has been christened ‘Contribute your E-waste to educate a child’.
Under this, the secondary school students not only undertook an extensive awareness drive to highlight the threat of ‘e-waste’, but also taught citizens about methods of safe disposal, recycling and reuse.
In the last week of February, the students also organised an ‘e-waste’ collection drive in Vashi, Koparkhairane, Turbhe and other neighbouring areas. This collection drive was nothing short of a raging success.
Speaking to the Times of India, one of the students Shaikh Falak said, “Our drive got an overwhelming response from the residents. Within a fortnight we collected as much as 280kg of e-waste, including all sorts of e-goods, even television sets.”
This e-waste was later sent to a recycling unit for appropriate disposal and recycling.
The money that has been raised by the sale will now be used for the for the education of underprivileged children of the society.

“The school is looking forward to making Navi Mumbai ‘e-waste free’ and has invited patrons from neighbouring housing societies to support this cause by contributing their ‘e-wastes’, thus not only protecting the environment but also helping in the education of economically deprived children,” Zulekha Siddiqui, the principal told TOI.
This school truly believes that change begins at home. It reflects in how the institution has equipped its own campus with required facilities to collect ‘e-wastes’ and also ensure it is properly disposed of. The students have requested citizens to drop their e-waste in this ‘school collection box.’
We hope this unique initiative inspires many more schools to replicate the model and helps make not just their neighbourhood but also the city ‘e-waste free.’
