Waterlogging is a problem in Kochi during the monsoons. Apart from disrupting daily life, waterlogging breeds mosquitoes as well.
The Kochi Corporation has decided to solve this issue once and for all, by taking the help of Metro Man, E Sreedharan, to help create a ‘drainage master plan.’
Sreedharan, Soumini Jain (the Mayor of Kochi), and a few councillors inspected areas in the city, known to get flooded during the rains. The team visited areas including Park Avenue Road, Gandhi statue near DH Ground, corporation office premises, government guesthouse area and the High Court junction.
Mayor Soumini Jain, claims that a significant amount of money is spent each month, to solve the waterlogging problem and the mosquito menace. She also said that upon discussing these issues with Sreedharan, he offered technical help to help resolve them.
Sreedharan has been asked by the corporation to prepare a technical report, focussing on the central part of Kochi, which does not have a drainage master plan. The technical report will be based on the waterlogging chart of the city provided by the engineering wing, according to the Mayor.
Kochi’s dream of being waterlogging-free can be realised if all the government agencies that share the ownership of the arterial roads, work in tandem.

Sreedharan is optimistic and confident that Kochi can get respite, from waterlogging woes. He mentions that funding is required for the project. A study report on the project will be made and submitted to the corporation.
