Punekars will now be able to go digital for free, thanks to the new Wi-Fi facilities that have been launched throughout the city!
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) introduced 150 Wi-Fi hotspots in Pune city on 26 January 2018, the day India celebrated 69 years of being a Republic.
PMC plans to make Pune an entirely digital city by 2020 and wants its citizens to be 100 percent digitally literate. The setting up of these Wi-Fi hotspots is the first step towards this aim.
Although the number of current locations is 150, and initially, the free Wi-fi will be available in and around major gardens, hospitals, and near police stations, PMC is planning to soon expand the number of Wi-Fi hotspots to 199.
Google will be partnering with PMC in the launch of this project.
According to the Hindustan Times, Mr Kunal Kumar, who is the municipal commissioner of Pune said, “Pune is the first city where Google is helping a corporation in India for such a project.”
PSCDCL (Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited) has enabled citizens to use the first 50 MB data at a speed of 512 kbps without charges. The log-in name for these Wi-Fi hotspots is ‘Pune Wi-Fi.’

Rajendra Jagtap, the CEO of PSCDCL said that there is no downloading limit for government websites.
PSCDCL will soon launch a grievance cell to let citizens file their complaints about possible poor networks in the open Wi-Fi.
