11 Things You Need to Know About the SC Designated Judge Indu Malhotra

Senior Advocate Indu Malhotra is creating history, as she becomes the first woman to be elevated as judge of the Supreme Court directly from the Bar. Here are some things you must know about her.

1. Born in 1956 in Bengaluru to well-known advocate Om Prakash Malhotra, Indu Malhotra is a second-generation lawyer.

2. After the completion of her schooling from Delhi, she did her B.A. (Hons.) Political Science from Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi, and later did her Masters in Political Science from Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi.

3. After obtaining her Master’s Degree, she worked briefly as a Lecturer in Political Science at the Miranda House College and Vivekanand College, Delhi University.

4. She then steered towards law and completed her legal education at the Delhi University.

5. She joined the legal profession in 1983 and later secured the first position in the Advocate-on-Record exam for the Supreme Court, which is a feat in itself.

6. She worked with PM Parekh at the beginning of her career as an apprentice.

7. In 2007 she was designated a senior counsel, making her only the second woman to be given this recognition. The first being Justice Leila Seth.

8. Indu Malhotra has served as a member of the Central government-appointed High-Level Committee (HLC) in the Ministry of Law and Justice to review ‘Institutionalisation of Arbitration Mechanism in India’.

9. Indu has also authored the third edition of The Law and Practice of Arbitration and Conciliation, 2014.

10. Along with the various positions she has held, she has also served as Standing Counsel for the State of Haryana, and represented statutory bodies such as the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR), before the Supreme Court.

11. Given her vast experience of over thirty years, she has also served as amicus curiae in a number of cases.
