BBMP To The ‘Raksha’, Plans Wearable Band To Keep Bengaluru’s Women Safe

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has proposed a wristband be made for women in the city, which they can use to protect themselves. The band, which they’ve suggested be named ‘Raksha Band’, will be used to alert their family members as well as a central monitoring agency if they are in distress.

A certain hand movement activates the wristband, which then sends the woman’s location details to her family and friends.

This is a Rs 100-crore proposal and has been sent to the Centre for approval. It is part of the ‘safe city’ scheme, reports The Times of India. Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad told TOI that the money would come from the Nirbhaya fund.

Though the band costs Rs 700-800, it will be available for Rs 300.

The band is integrated with a mobile app, which will have all the numbers of police and emergency services. The woman can add contact details of up to five people who will alert if she’s in distress. The device will also automatically record audio and click pictures through the app and share those with the central server for aiding security agencies.

The app also gives you information on how a well-lit an area is, whether it has CCTV and whether there are any security agencies nearby – this is crowdsourced by users who will then help the central monitoring agency to calculate the safety score for the area. This will then be viewed by other users. In three years, the BBMP is targeting the use of 10,00,000 bands, reports TOI.
